hunting trip - nah - camping maybe!
Back to Full Blog

Well it's Sunday September, 3rd evening and 5:30 pm and we are aboard an Alaska Airlines 737 just leaving for the 1 hr and 20 min flight to Dillingham which is 390 miles West-Northwest. On the flight I sat next to an outfitter from Kodiak, Fred O'Hearn, who was taking 4 hunters in to Dillingham. He does fishing, hunting and tours on Kodiak Island. I think next spring Marijo and I will fly to Kodiak and have a look around as it is a special place. On arrival, with perhaps 150 other prospective slayers of wildlife, and the sorting out of bags and gun cases/fishing poles from an area which is probably 20 ft wide and 35 ft long and the baggage tray is across the 20 ft end. Too many people and too small an area is really mass confusion as most of the people up front didn't have a bag in the first cart full. Major congestion. You have to realize that the start of hunting season sees an influx of people like no other time of the year and most of the aircraft that fly in commercially are 20 passenger. Oh yes, to add to the confusion there were people trying to check in for the outbound flight at the same time. Not a good time to wander in without a determined purpose. It took probably 1 1/2 hr to get the luggage straighted out and then call the motel/hotel called the Bristol Inn where I would spend Sunday night, to come pick me up. Nice place, nice people but like everything in the interior (anyplace not served by a road or railroad)(my definition) is expensive and the night was 167.00 for what would be a "Super 8". (for the drinkers a 1/2 gallon of Captain Morgan Spiced Rum costs 67.50 in Dillingham) The next day around 1 pm Mulchatna Air Taxi, picked me up and took me out to their operation at the airport. We left in a Cessna 206 with 6 passengers and all our baggage for Ekwok the native village that the outfitter operates out of. This is a Upic village of about 400, the Upic are part of the Aleut's. Ekwok is about 80 airmiles from Dillingham and sits on the Nushagak River (new-sha-gack). The only way in is by, river which is about 110 miles, by air, or four wheeler atv or snowmobile in the winter across the tundra (no roads). The electricity is supplied by diesel generator and the fuel is brought in by barge or by C-130 aircraft in large fuel bladders. There are only about 5 or six truck/car vehicles in the village as everyone uses 4 wheel atv's and again the reason is a lack of roads and gas is up from 5 dollars a gallon. It's always better to get 50 to 80 miles to the gallon than 15. The same thing applies to snow mobiles in the winter. The other thing you need to live hear is a boat because the river is the highway to everywhere further than a few miles. The outfitters girlfriend is the only other white person I saw in the village is a teacher for 1st to 4th grade and she has 19 students total. When we landed at the airport which is a gravel strip about 3000' ft. long and will take aircraft as large as the C-130. We were met by the outfitter and luggage was put in a trailer on the atv and everyone sits on the back of the atv (two people). We went to the house and had dinner and talked for awhile and then the other hunter, whose name is Tom Schank and he came in from Middleton, Mass. to bow hunt for moose and bear, were taken to a cabin for the night. Cabin is a good description of the place and even though it contained two bedrooms, living room, kitchen and mud room the interior was only partially finished. Electricity was there for everything except heat and that was supplied by a diesel hi-tech room furnace which worked excellently. It had been someones home and the outfitter is in the process of redoing it. Can't say I think much of the carpentry or finish work but when you live in the villages you do it all yourself or it doesn't get done. Enough for now - will get back to it tomorrow. bob
